Secrets of Krakow - Ladies of the Crypt PDF

Krakow is famous for its tourist attractions. Cloth Hall, St.Mary;s Church, the Wawel Castle. I shall try to present places less known, but extremely interesting and worth seeing. To get to the most of them, no transfer is needed, just a walk. Also, there is no need for buying up of private guided tours .All these places are available within walking distance from the Market Square.Today, one of my favourite less known places - the Crypts under the Church of St. Casimir, Prince Royal, commonly Known as the Reformers Church

Located just a few steps from Szczepanski Square,is the Order of Franciskan Friars or Minor Monks. Besides the residential part,it contains the Church and across the Street Droga Krzyzowa, the Temple. The Temple was built in years 1666-1673 by Franciszek Szemberg Foundation in place of an earlier Temple, backdated to 1628,ruined by fire.It was constructed in Baroque style, but not splashed  with luxury. Built like the other Reformation churches,in accordance with the strict rules concerning the shape, size and design. It is compounded of two-span Presbiterium, closed by a straight wall and 3 columned nave. While inside the Church,it is worth to observe the late Baroqueian altars. To find the real treasure and directly the Secret of Crypts,we must ask for help of the Furtianin. For this purpose,we use the door located at the left of Church’s entrance. A short negotiation, accompanied by the mention of our support for the conservation works carried out within the complex, and just we jointly open the low gate, located in the main nave.A few steps down and we begin to feel cold chills on our backs. We’ve just entered one of the most terrifying places in Krakow. The grotto, in which the crypt was created,is characterized by a unique micro-climate, that causes  spontaneous mummification of mortal remains. During the centuries several thousands of people were buried there.During ll World War,when in the crypt an ammunition magazine for the German Army was set up,it resulted in the destruction of nearly all mummies.Today, there are about 50 left.I’ll tell you about three of those and surprisingly, all will be of women .

Breath of wind outside the window. Weather, not to chase away, even a dog. Suddenly, someone knocked on the Monastery gate. The Furtianin, strongly reluctant ,dragged himself towards the gate, opened slightly the window and saw a woman.Alone,in this weather, something must have happened.Driven by curiosity,he slightly opened the door.So came to the Monastery Domicela Skalska, poor embroider worker of chasubles and church tablecloths. For 20 years she was selflessly cleaning.the church without expecting any payment back. When she died in 1864 the fact came to light, that she came from a wealthy family of magnates from Volhynia. Probably, premarital  affair led her to run away from home. All her life she dreamed of going to France.Propably ,her lover was a Frenchman. Fate, even if to late, has fulfilled her dream. Today, her earthly remains lay next to the mortal remains of a Frenchman, Napoleon’s soldier, who stayed in the Monastery for his convalescence. He never regained his health, died in 1812.

Air,help, rescue.Such, certainly were the last thoughts of the nameless girl. Her family name was Modrewicz, history did not record her private name.12-year old girl with well preserved hair and sad, full of fear face grimace. The child propably drowned and was found in the sludge. The interment took place in XVlll century. The mummy is in an open coffin in Modrzejewski’s Crypt.

Love, singing, joy.Great expectations for the future, perhaps a delicate fear of wedding night’s Experience. Certainly, just such thoughts spinned in the head of Urszula Morszkowska, Lady of Barcice, when her father served her the goblet of wine.It was her wedding ,her lover, the father had forgiven her Sometimes,we see the world the way we would like to see it,not as it is in reality. The father did not forgive, the goblet contained poison, besides the wine. Honor of the family name-above all It was in 1787. For the bride, beautiful wedding day turned into her last day. The corpse, dressed in wedding costume of a bride, lays still in the Crypt, warning against excessive independence of young maidens. According to the legend, she was poisoned by her own father on her wedding day as punishment for the misalliance on her part.
